Mar 14, 2009 Powderface Creek

Just went out to get some sun and went out for a couple hours. It was a beautifully sunny day but wind was howling. That wind made it a bit uncomfortable. We didn't bring our snowshoes but there was enough snow. Right on the path there was the remnants of a deer that must have been killed within the last day or so. Most of it was not on the path but Jake found a rack of ribs in the bush. It took a bit of doing to get it from him!

Feb 28, 2009 Paddy's Flat

With some new snow over the last week we thought we would take advantage. We went back to Paddy's Flat. It was a beautiful sunny day with very little wind. Saw lots of tracks - some big ones possibly Elk or Moose - and some small ones possibly coyote.

February 15, 2009 Beaver Flat

We went back to a hike we did in the fall. Through Beaver Flat and then follow the Elbow River south. This isn't a marked trail so there is actually a little more snow. Otherwise there isn't really enough snow for snowshoeing. On the Elbow we came across an ice jam and there was a large vortex of water going under the ice flow. Pretty cool.

February 1, 2009 Station Flats

Superbowl day and what better way to hangout on the couch and watch the game then by going on a hike first! Station Flats has a few trails going from it. These trails are used by horseback riders and mountain bikers in the summer so it's best to go in the winter. We choose to do a loop which incorporated the Sulfur Springs Trail and the Elbow Vally Trail. There was a gain of about 250m but with going up and down it's more like 400m of gain.

We scared two grouse (or partridge or prairie chicken) from just beside the path. One only went about 20 feet away so I got some good pics of it. Jake and Cleo didn't even notice them! Earlier in the hike Jake found part of a dead rabbit and wasted no time in swallowing it, fur and all. There was no way to get it from him. We figured he would barf that up sometime in the next day, probably at night. Turned out he didn't barf. Whew!

There wasn't very much new snow and there was quite a bit of melting lately. This meant a fairly loud hike with the snowshoes. We could have gone without the shoes except it would have been quite slippery in many spots.

Jan. 10, 2009 Price Camp at Sandy McNabb

Today we returned to a hike we tried a couple weeks ago. This time we wanted to do the whole loop. For the first 3 km the trail had a snowmobile track and a horse track so the going was good. Then both the snowmobile and horse went south and our trail was unused. Now the going was a little harder. To top it off, we lost the trail after we crossed the creek. A hard slog over a hill and we found a cut line and then rejoined the trail. Those were 2 tough km! Then the trail was well used for 3 km until the wind had obliterated the trail. The trail followed the highway (which is closed in the winter) so we opted to go on the road as we were all getting tired. 11 km and 4 hours later we arrived back at the car. Good hike and we will do this again sometime.

Jan. 4, 2009 Jumping Pound Trail

This was our first time on this trail, although we have been near this trail before. We just did the west loop. Doing both loops is about 10 km. We couldn't see where the trail went toward the loop and just went through the campground like others have done. Some very nice views from the north leg of the trail. At the end of the hike we got back to the car, which was parked on the side of the road, and both Cleo and Jake nearly got into on coming traffic! I thought I trained them better than that.

Sandy McNabb

Today we did a short hike at Sandy McNabb. About 20 km west of Turner Valley. It was about -8 or so with overcast skies and snow forecast for later in the day. About a kilometer from the trail head we saw two Moose. One was a little skittish and hid behind some trees. This was the second time we've seen a Moose this winter!

We hadn't been to Sandy McNabb in the winter so we wandered around until we found the trail head. The road to the majority of the trails is closed during the winter but there are some right at the gate. Mostly for skiing in the winter so we tried to find the horse trails. Found Price Camp trail and went for about a kilometer before turning back. Total of about 4 km today. We will come back to this one.
