We gave ourselves a good test today. This is a favourite hike of ours. We have done it at least 20 times over the years. We go up Powder Face Creek trail for 3 km, then go off that trail to Prairie Link trail. This goes for 3 km to Prairie Creek trail. We then turn back along Prairie Creek trail.
In the summer it is a 12 km hike that takes 3 to 3.5 hours. With snowshoes, we thought we would just go to the fork at Prairie Link from the Powder Face Creek trail. That was good but we felt we good go all the way around. Toward the end of the hike along Prairie Creek the trail leaves the creek and goes up a big hill. We figured the creek is frozen so we can walk along it. We have done this in the past. OOPS. The creek is MOSTLY frozen! We ended up crossing the creek 11 times to avoid open water and places where the creek bank was a rock face. Check out the last 2 km of track in Google Maps.
5 hours and 13 km's later we finished. Just a bit stiff today!
